$870,000 Jury Verdict in Colbert County Truck Wreck Case

August 2010

The firm represented Mr. Lee Ricks, an Alabama Department of Transportation employee, in a case against Transport Distribution Company (TDC), a nationwide trucking and distribution company. The case arose from an accident involving an 18-wheeler owned and operated by TDC crashing into the back of a sign truck driven by Mr. Ricks on March 4, 2009. Mr. Ricks saw the 18-wheeler bearing down on him from behind at a speed of over 60 mph, but stayed in his position without moving out of the way in order to protect his co-workers who were performing road work in front of his truck. As a result of the collision, Mr. Ricks suffered substantial damages, including, among other things: permanent back and wrist injuries, extreme pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, lost past and future income, and emotional distress. At the close of a week-long trial, a Colbert County, Alabama jury returned a verdict in favor of Mr. Ricks and awarded him $870,000 in damages.
